Where I am From, and Why I am Taking MKTG4983

My entire family lives within a 1-mile radius of my childhood home. When I say my entire family, I mean my entire family. That includes all my grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and even some second cousins. I am a Syrian Jew and was raised in a traditional middle eastern home. Every Sabbath is family dinner, every holiday spent in Synagogue, while Hebrew and Arabic are always in the background.

My background is old fashioned and traditional in many ways. It is also blended with modernization and the 21st century.

I am from Brooklyn, New York. On the streets of Brooklyn, a Rabbi and a hipster walking side by side normal. Brooklyn shaped me. I am traditional. I am also modern.

Being from Brooklyn, Manhattan is a short subway ride away. I think most cities are anti-climactic once you know New York (Boston feels suburban to me at times). I definitely have a New York mindset. Everyone says that I talk too fast and that I am on speed. I am an adventure seeker, and, like the city that never sleeps, I am the girl that never sleeps. My mind is always moving. There are always TV shows like Breaking Bad to watch, and homework assignments to complete. If I fall asleep by 2 am, I consider it a success. What can I say? It is the New Yorker in me. But why sleep when you can go to a rooftop bar, a broadway show, or a psychic?

As a student at Northeastern, I decided to take MKTG4983. This class focuses on marketing and sales for startups. After my first CO-OP, I realized that I really do not like bureaucratic, big firms. They are not innovative or exciting in any way. I would love to learn more about start-ups, and how they are built. I feel like it would be so rewarding to work on a successful start-up. While I do not see myself as an entrepreneur at the moment, I do like the idea of a start-up for a number of reasons. First, I do think I am an editor by nature. I am not a creator, but I do like taking things that already exist and making them better. I also think start-ups are more innovative because they do not have to deal with a board of directors and shareholders. Things happen faster at a startup, it does not need to approve by your boss’s, boss’s, boss. Like I said before, I like faster-paced environments. I also believe startups to be more ethical. Many startups care about more than money, they care about making the world a better place. I want to learn what it takes to make a startup successful because I know that is difficult. I want to learn if all my assumptions about startups are true (because I have never worked for a startup, this is all assumptions). I want to learn more about startups that failed because that’s arguably more important than startups that succeeding. I also have never taken a class like this at Northeastern, so I am excited to learn about a space I do not know much about. I do believe that I will be able to implement the lessons learned in this class into the real world, and that is always the overarching goal.
